What is a Magnifying Mirror and How Does It Work?

With several types of mirrors on the market, it can be overwhelming when you are about to choose one that is ideal for you and your needs. Finding a mirror that will zoom in on your face to apply makeup flawlessly, check for any stray hairs, or even shave may be exactly what you are looking for. All mirrors have a magnification power, but none of them come close to a magnifying mirror to give you that crystal clear and wide view.

So you may be wondering, what is a magnifying mirror and how does it defer from the others?  Believe it or not, this type of mirror involves a lot of physics and math behind its overall functionality, unlike other mirrors. It is usually concave in shape and has a slight curve in the middle of its surface called an incident angle. This angle specifically concentrates on the light beams that hit the mirror’s surface, intensifying light as it gets closer to the focal point.

When light bounces off, the image seen will come from a narrower view unlike a flat mirror, which then enhances and magnifies what appears in the mirror. A flat mirror only shows what is being focused on in a less life-size reflection. Because of the curve in the mirror, whatever image you are focusing on will appear as if it is floating in the air. And as you start to move away from the mirror, you will notice how the magnification gets stronger while the view gets smaller.

With proper manipulation of angles and lighting, this mirror can help you focus on a specific part of your face, making it a great tool when you need a close-up. When your face is put between a focus and a magnifying mirror, you can even see the pores and hair follicles on your skin.
